Why Are My Garage Door Safety Sensors Blinking?

A blinking sensor LED almost always means misalignment or a blocked beam. Here's the 2-minute fix.

What the LEDs mean

Modern openers have two photo-eye sensors near the floor. One emits a beam, the other receives it. If the receiver loses sight of the beam, it blinks and the door refuses to close.

The fix

  • Clear leaves, spider webs, and trash bins from the beam path
  • Wipe both lenses with a microfiber cloth
  • Loosen the wing nut on the blinking sensor and tilt until the LED goes solid
  • Tighten the wing nut without re-bumping the sensor
